The Conjurer
Gabriel Chahine, a Lebanese-born gallery owner with close ties to far-left movements, presents himself as a former fighter alongside the Palestinians. In Toulouse, he crosses paths with Jean-Marc Rouillan — soon to become a co-founder of Action Directe. The connection between the two is instant. Soon enough, with the movement in need of funds, Gabriel proposes a quick way to make money: stealing The Conjurer, a painting by Hieronymus Bosch, then on display at the municipal museum of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. A 15th-century masterpiece by the Dutch painter — and an artwork they believe they could easily sell. That day, without knowing it yet, they set in motion a chain of events that would bind their fates forever.
